Don’t let money break you

Coordinated by Economy and Youth TAT, Yrityskylä is a learning environment for sixth and ninth-grade students where they can learn about society, working life and entrepreneurship. Yrityskylä has already reached 250,000 children and young people, and it has been awarded as the world’s best education innovation. Yrityskylä for primary school allows students to work in a profession of their choice for which they are paid a salary and to participate in society as a consumer and citizen. Yrityskylä for secondary school allows students to compete in managing a company on the global markets. Nordea is one of the main sponsors of Yrityskylä, and Nordea’s volunteers act as instructors in these Yrityskylä societies throughout Finland.

TAT Business courses offer free digital learning materials for upper secondary school and vocational school students. With the help of quality content, young people learn financial and working life skills, commercial knowledge and entrepreneurship. Nordea’s volunteers lead workshops in the Takeoff event of TAT Business courses – the biggest business event for youth in Europe. Takeoff is organised every year in connection with Slush, and it brings together Nordic upper secondary school and vocational school students. Our volunteers also lecture on economics in the partner schools of Business courses.

Nordea supports Plan’s work in Finland by supporting day-to-day life skills of children and young people from an immigrant background and by introducing young people to Finnish society through Plan’s Matkalla project. Nordea employees facilitate financial management workshops in which they discuss daily money spending with the young people.

In line with our community engagement strategy, we want to promote financial literacy and entrepreneurship in Finland. Through cooperation with schools, we have an excellent opportunity to discuss these themes with children and young people and offer our expertise to educational institutions. The goal is to inspire and teach young people to manage their finances through workshops and games, for example, so that everyone would be put on an equal footing when it comes to succeeding in life. Nordea employees visit pre-schools, comprehensive schools, upper secondary institutions and universities across the country. We also organise financial skills themed school days called “Oman talouden eväät” at Nordea’s headquarters in Helsinki.

You can learn financial skills also by playing. In November 2018, Nordea launched, together with Economy and Youth TAT and the Finnish Foundation for Share Promotion, a mobile game called Moneymaster. The game can be played by yourself or at school during the lessons or at various events. The objective is that the young get interested in the economy through the game. The player learns about saving, using money, investing and managing their finances by making financial decisions. The game is free and does not require registration. The game will be available in English and Swedish soon.

This joint venture of three banks (Danske Bank, Nordea and OP) aims to support young people in their daily use of money, to lower the threshold to managing their banking and other financial matters as well as to prevent the creation of serious problems and circles of debt. The project is intended for 16–19-year-olds to support them in managing their finances. The project is coordinated by the Helsinki Deaconess Institute. The Economic Skills project is one of Nordea’s community engagement initiatives which aims to support young people in managing their finances with the help of our personnel’s volunteer workers.
